Gibbons are sometimes called "lesser apes." While their skulls and teeth resemble those of the great apes and they lack tails, gibbons are smaller, are pair bonded, and do not make nests. In these ways they are more like monkeys. Gibbons dwell in trees and are known for their skill at brachiating, or swinging from branch to branch sometimes at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. There are about twelve different species of gibbons.

Carara National Park offers the chance to see a Southern Tamandua or White faced Capuchin in the dense forest.

All monkeys in Uganda are members of the family Cercopithecidae (Old World monkeys). They fall into five genera: Collogues (closely related to the leaf eating monkeys of Asia), Cercopithecus (guenons), Papio (baboons), Erythrocebus (patas) and Cerocebus (Mangabeys). Some of these monkeys are nocturnal while others are diurnal. Important species in Uganda include; Vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) De Brazza’s monkey (cercopithecus neglectus) Blue monkey (cercopithecus aethiops) I’hoesti monkey (cercopithecus I’hoesti) Red tailed monkey (cercopithecus ascinius) Red colobus (piliocolobus badius) Black and white colobus (colobus guereza) Patas monkey (erythrocebus patas).

Spider monkeys remained in Belize as pets and be of any real threat to humans. However, as a tourist, it is best simply to note that both spider and howler in their natural habitat. Although they are very cute and adorable it is known that monkeys in the wild to throw objects such as fruits, rocks, and coconut to the people. Howler monkeys are the biggest of all nine species of New World monkeys. And, they have wide nostrils that open from the side and no padding on their rumps, which sets them apart from Old World monkeys. They are also blessed with a tail that can be used for grasping, holding and wrapping around objects. Howlers use their tails as an extra arm with which they can use to grasp or hang from the tree branches. Given Howlers rarely go to the ground, their tail comes in quite handy. Since leaves make up the majority of their diet, they prefer to remain above ground where they can dine to their hearts content.
